Education Promoting Health, Safety, Personal Social & Sustainable Development
<
>
Education promoting Health, Safety, Personal, Social & Sustainable Development (HSPSSD) is a term used in this encyclopedia to describe several subjects and extended education activities that promote different aspects of human development which are at the centre of the social role of the school. (This collection of programs is sometimes called Health & Well-being.) These include aspects such as health, wellness, life (living) skills, safety, security, personal development, relationships, social development, social responsibility, citizenship, concern for the environment, moral, ethical and sustainable production and consumption, basic knowledge needed to participate in society, and others. This social role of schooling is equal in importance to the accreditation of intellectual development and academic knowledge as well as the vocational preparation of students for work and is critical to the school’s custodial role in providing a safe, health and supportive environment.
Education promoting HSPSSD is delivered through several core subjects or curricula, including health & life skills (H&LS) education (also called "Personal, Social & Health") as well as Home Economics education and Physical Education. As well, parts of several other core subjects promote HSPSSD when/if they address human development. These include social studies (citizenship & history), language arts (literature, drama, poetry), science (human biology, ecological systems), language training for immigrant students, vocational and alternative education programs for special needs students and early childhood education for disadvantaged students. Further, elective courses or subjects such as moral and religious education, the arts and the responsible use of technologies can be aligned to promote HSPSSD. Education or learning which promote student HSPSSD is also delivered in extended education programs such as extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, school routines and rituals, on-line and school-linked community-based youth and family programs. The intended student learning objectives in core subjects promoting HSPSSD should be supported by guidance and policy documents related to recommended pedagogy (teaching & learning methods) , student assessment and educational resources as well as teacher education and development programs. Objectives for school-linked extended education programs and activities are often less formal and aimed at a variety of objectives including youth development, community service and tutoring to remediate learning problems or enrich student achievement in selected subjects.
