Extended Education - Programs, Activities, Offerings & Strategies
<
>
Extended Education (EE) is a term used in this encyclopedia to capture the non-classroom learning opportunities and programs that can be done through extra-curricular and co-curricular activities, informal learning and "free time/play" activities, school routines, rituals and events, on-line projects, social media campaigns, use of community radio and local media outlets, family-based education programs, student peer and student leadership programs, mentoring programs, community faith-based, health or social/civil or youth organizations and others. This informal learning can be a specific, focused on specific skills, attitudes or knowledge such as remeial instruction/tutoring, dance, conservation activities, sports, music, the arts, technology, environmental citizenship, religious instruction, character development and youth leadership. Or, it can be more general, where student health, personal and social development are acquired overall. Extended Education can be delivered through “EE programs” (with well-defined learning objectives, trained staff and structures), through “EE activities” (regular, repeated, but based on youth interest and where learning is incidental or seen as secondary to enjoyment and socialization) and “EE offerings” (short term, not necessarily repeated, varying often and organized quickly to attract youth participation). These EE programs, activities and offerings could be delivered through a more purposeful combination of activities (EE “strategies”) to develop a broader or defined spectrum of skills, attitudes, knowledge and behaviours. More research is needed to better understand the dose, intensity or duration of extended education programs required to achieve a defined set of skills, attitudes and knowledge or to mitigate/enhance a specific set of circumstances affecting youth development.
