International Discussion Group: Healthy Schools/School Health Promotion

This page introduces our International Discussion Group on school-based and school-linked health promotion or healthy schools. The discussion group was started in 2006. This discussion is focused on the promotion of physical, social and mental health and is primarily concerned with the partnerships between the education and health sectors. This focus on health is different but similar to partnerships between schools and other sectors such as justice/law enforcement (safe schools), economic, civic and social development (community schools), humanitarian (school health & nutrition) and relief aid (emergencies in education) and other forms of human development.

This IDG has created a research/knowledge development agenda, published a set of Glossary Terms on HS/SHP, has started an e-book, published A New Paradigm for School Health Promotion in the 21st Century and has developed a prototype Online Workbook on School Health Promotion.  See the related Wiki-Summaries on these topics.

As with other discussion groups in this KDE program and web site, it is expected that each group will recruit other participants, present their work in webinars/web meetings, prepare a set of Glossary Terms (GT) (1-2 paragraphs) on selected topics and start a Bibliography/Toolbox (BT) of selected research and resources. If participants' time or financial resources permit, the IDG can prepare longer summaries such as Encyclopedia Entries  (EE) (1-2 pages) or Handbook Sections (HS) (10-15 pages) which eventually can be published.

The topics being discussed in this IDG are in this on-going draft Research/Knowledge Development Agenda . This list is open for amendment - contact dmccall@internationalschoolhealth.org if you would like to add or amend the questions in this agenda.

Here are some current or important highlights from this International Discussion Group:

  • ISHN and its partners are pleased to facilitate an ongoing global discussion on the new strategies and dimensions needed for the “new” school health promotion of the 21st Century. Please read and comment on the draft statement on A New Paradigm for School Health Promotion in the 21st Century.  This dialogue was launched in 2017. We invite practitioners, officials and researchers who are engaged with multi-component approaches such as Health Promoting Schools, Coordinated School Health, Comprehensive School Health and School Health & Nutrition to participate in this important renewal process. This global dialogue will include webinars, workshops in several parts of the world, the publication of an e-book and other activities.

  • We are gradually addressing the questions raised in the Research/Knowledge Development Agenda on Healthy Schools/School Health Promotion. This agenda lists several urgent or important questions which should be answered if our school health promotion efforts are to be more effective and sustainable
