Infectious Diseases - Mitigating, Managing, Preventing - Overview
<
>
Mitigating, managing and preventing Infectious Diseases through school-based and school-linked programs is best done by developing and implementing a "multi-intervention program" or framework that guides and coordinates the various interventions. This is usually a challenging process for most issues because of the complexity and sustained investments that are required. However, in work related to infectious diseases, the knowledge and practices are very specialized and the expertise is often operating in silos, even within the medical community.
Infectious disease outbreaks have interrupted schooling and caused prolonged student absences many times in many countries. Such outbreaks can affect entire school systems for several months, close a few schools in specific location or even or even groups of students over extended periods of time. School health and emergency response programs have responded to such outbreaks, including HIV/AIDS, malaria, SARS, Lyme disease, measles, dengue fever and many more. The scale of the Covid 19 disruption is much larger but gaps revealed are typical of many outbreaks, large and small. However, governments, practitioners and researchers have not yet synthesized and learned from these typical patterns in the school setting. This summary was first posted in May 2022.
