Cost-Benefits and Cost-Effectiveness of School-based and School-Linked Health Promotion & Social Development

This page lists research, reports and resources on cost-effectiveness and cost-benefits of school health, safety, basic education and social development programs. The various studies are listed under different categories. Most of the research has focused on the school-based and school-linked prevention of specific diseases or improvement of specific health-promoting or risky behaviours. Consequently, we have grouped them in that way, including both multi-intervention and single intervention studies under those health/social issues or behaviours. We have also included categories for interventions on poverty/disadvantage/disparities/social determinants as well as social influences such as the media, parenting, peer group, youth culture but the studies are few in these areas.

This page includes both "cost-effectiveness" studies (which compare costs between different approaches or interventions as well as "cost-benefit" studies which compare the cost-savings (usually measured in health care, social and morbidity/quality of life costs) between an intervention and no or existing interventions. Most of the studies located thus far in our searches and monitoring do not differentiate between the two different types of calculations, so we have not done so here.

As well, there are many other similar studies documenting the economic burden of various diseases and problems and the potential value of prevention but often did not measure or calculate the costs of specific prevention approaches like school health promotion or specific interventions. In this list, we have tried to focus on the value of school-based or school-linked interventions.
