About this Knowledge Exchange ProgramThis is a featured page

Welcome to our international knowledge exchange program that includes summaries developed through wiki-based editing and discussion as well as webinars, web meetings and on-line discussions using instant messaging.

The summaries and presentations have been written, edited or presented by experts and practitioners from around the world. We take this opportunity to thank the ever-growing list of editors, writers and contributors who have already made this web site a global resource.

We invite visitors to this web site to comment on or even edit the definitions and summaries in this wiki. This wiki-based technology permits us to offer these summaries in an open draft format, thereby enabling us to update or amend them easily.

The term "schools for all" captures the various school-based and school-linked programs that support all human development purposes as well as for ensuring that schools serve all students, regardless of their background. The term also reflects the common interest of the partner organizations in that delivered jointly with health, law enforcement, social and economic development and environmental sectors. To see the many different but compatible approaches, see our list of statements and models of school-based and school-linked approaches and programs.

This program intends to serve these audiences and organizations:
  • practitioners, researchers, officials, policy-makers, parent leaders, and youth representatives by offering a reference tool and several summaries of the evidence, experience and examples on selected issues, programs and practices
  • university and college students and their professors who will be able to use this platform to publish their course work and to present their findings in webinars
  • national and state/provincial ministries and agencies who will both benefit from the shared, applied knowledge when developing policies and programs as well as have the opportunity to be a world leader on topics that they have been addressing
  • international and national networks and non-governmental organizations who can use these summaries for their advocacy or member services activities
The topics covered in this international knowledge exchange program are organized alphabetically as well as under broad categories related to school-based and linked health promotion, learning, safety, social development, environmental concerns and educational effectiveness. To see the list of topics, go to our Alphabetical List of Topics. We have used the ten key strategies promoted by the International School Health Network for school-based and school-linked programs as a content organizer. See our List of Topics with a Synthesis Framework for an overview.

The summaries in this encyclopedia are in the form of glossary terms (one-two paragraphs), encyclopedia entries(two pages) handbook sections (10-15 pages) and bibliographies/toolboxes research, reports and resources. These documents summarize the evidence, experiences and examples of approaches, strategies and programs that promote healthy schools, safe schools, community schools, eco-friendly schools and effective schools. This web site is an excellent place to start when you are considering school-based or school-linked programs that promote various forms of human development.

The webinars, web-meetings and on-line discussions using instant messaging tools that are hosted here are recorded digitally for others to view and hear. We also post links to presentations held in conferences held around the world.

We will develop the topics and content of this web site in several ways over several years. In many cases, we hope to find funding to support International Discussion Groups that may use separate wikis and webinars to develop a series of topics under a broad heading such as School Nutrition or School Health Indicators. In other cases, we will develop glossary terms (as a starting point for more extensive documents) by working through various collections and toolboxes available on other web sites. At the same time, we will engage our partners in developing some of the core school-related concepts (eg comprehensive approaches) and related knowledge exchange or operational terms (eg levels of evidence and experience) that we will use for this program.

Many of these Glossary Terms and Encyclopedia Entries will eventually appear in a final form on other web sites. We also anticipate that authors, editors and contributors will use the Handbook Sections as the basis of articles submitted tp peer-reviewed journals. This will be at the discretion of our sponsors and those designated individuals. Consequently, we ask that readers and users of this web site respect the normal rules of copyright and web-based protocols.

Many of these glossary terms and encyclopedia entries are based on bibliographies of research and resources as well as on longer summaries (Handbook Sections) that have been developed through funded projects. In many cases, the funders of thoise projects will publish the shorter summaries on their respective web sites. The longer documents from those funded projects will be maintained in this wiki-based web site (www.schools-for-all.org).

The contents of this encyclopedia will grow gradually. Each entry or summary is intended to stand alone, as a useful tool for all concerned, but we have a plan to continuously add content through world wide collaboration.
